Descripción botánica

Tree size attains a height of about 20 to 35 m, with a trunk diameter of 60 to 95 cm. It is reported to develop a cylindrical but irregular stem, with commercial lengths of 7 to 15 m.

Hábitat natural

Pterogyne nitens grows within an area of seasonally dry subtropical forests. It is a pioneer species found in secondary forests on sandy, well drained sites in open areas. It is known or inferred that the harvesting of specimens from the wild for internat

Distribución natural

It is found from northern Argentina up to Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia.

Usos No-maderables

The sawdust of this species is sometimes used as a source of purple color.

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Occasionally white deposits in heartwood vessels. Vessels per mm2 10 to 20 (abundant). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pi Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Occasionally axial parenchyma lozenge-aliform. Occasionally axial parenchyma confluent. Axial parenchyma storied. Prismatic crystals in non-ch 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays storied. Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Prismatic crystals in radial alignment in procumbent ray cells (chambered cells). Prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
