DESCRIPCIÓN DEL ÁRBOL

Descripción botánica

D. purpurea is often 30 up to 40 m in height, with a trunk diameter of about 40 to 60 cm. Diameters of 100 cm are also possible. It develops cylindrical and straight stems 15 to 20 m long.

Hábitat natural

Diplotropis purpurea is found in primary and secondary forests on drylands. In Brazil it is reported in terra firme forests

Distribución natural

The natural growth range of the species is reported to range from the northeastern Colombian rainforests down to Bolivia.

Descripción anatómica de la madera

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Occasionally tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more. Occasionally white deposits in heartwood vessels. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ra Occasionally axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Axial parenchyma lozenge-aliform. Axial parenchyma confluent. Occasionally prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays commonly 2 seriate. Occasionally heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

Olor

Odor and taste are reported to be indistinct.

Color

The sapwood is clearly different from the heartwood. The heartwood is chocolate brown, turning to a lighter brown after exposure.

The grain is typically straight to slightly interlocked or wavy.

It is very resistant to attack by both white-rot and brown-rot fungi. It is also highly resistant to dry-wood termites but is attacked by marine borers.
