DESCRIPTION DE L'ARBRE

Description botanique

It is a small tree growing to a height of 10 m and 15 cm in diameter. The bole is short, generally cylindrical but fluted near the base. The buttresses are absent.

Habitat naturel

Mallotus philippensis is a pioneer species, typical of secondary forests.

Usages non ligneux

It is used as a nurse tree for Sal (Shorea robusta) plantations. The fruit yields an orange dye. This species is reported to have anti-parasitic properties against skin infections.

Description anatomique du bois

Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels in radial multiples of 4 or more common. Occasionally tyloses common. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less (very small). Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foramina Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Occasionally axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide. Ray height more than 1 mm. Ray width 1 to 3 cells. Occasionally rays exclusively uniseriate. Prismatic crystals in radial alignment in procumbent ray cells (chambered cells). Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells ( Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits. Fibers very thin walled.
