DESCRIPTION DE L'ARBRE

Description botanique

The tree reaches a height of 50 m, with diameters from 100 to 1.3 m. The bole is straight, cylindrical up to 26 m in length, generally unbuttressed, with a swollen base.

Habitat naturel

Anopyxis klaineana is a timber species which occurs in some abundance especially in wetter evergreen rain forests and in montane forests.

Description anatomique du bois

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Occasionally multiple perforation plates. Scalariform perforation plate Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Prismatic crystals in short chains in chambered axial parenchyma cells. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays non-storied. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Occasionally prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

The sapwood is paler than heartwood. The heartwood is reddish brown or yellow-brown , it is clearly demarcated.

This species is reported to have a medium to coarse texture.

Luster

This wood is frequently low in luster.

Not durable; important risks of decay attacks at any processing step, from logs up to final products. It must receive preservative treatment. Resistant to termites attack. Heartwood is sensible to Lyctus attacks.

Ease of Drying: Boards 25 mm thick take about 3 months to air dry. Drying Defects: When seasoned with care, end-splitting and surface checking are not significant during drying. Kiln Schedules: The timber kiln dries rapidly but marked collapse may occur in early stages of seasoning. This can be remedied by reconditioning.
