IDENTIFICATION DU BOIS

Description anatomique du bois

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. I Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

DESCRIPTION GÉNÉRALE DU BOIS

Odeur

The wood has no specific odor or taste.

Teinte

The sapwood is clearly differentiated from the heartwood. The heartwood is medium to light brown in color, attractive streaks are also reported.

Grain

The wood is straight-grained.

Texture

The texture is rather fine and uniform.

Luster

Wood surfaces are typically dull.

Durabilité naturelle

It is vulnerable to attack by the white-rot fungi, and is rated as non-resistant to decay.

Index de durabilité naturelle (1 = Très élevée, 7 = Très faible)

5

Résistance à l'imprégnation

The timber is reported to be very easy to preserve.

OUVRABILITÉ

Sciage

It saws easily, with a slight tendency to produce woolly surfaces.

Coupe de placage de déroulage

It is interesting for peeling.

Placage tranche

It is interesting for peeling.

Effet d'émoussement

The wood may have a moderate blunting effect on cutting tools.

Usinage

Machining operations are reportedly easy, but it has a tendency to produce woolly surfaces. It behaves better when seasoned.

Rabotage

Seasoned material planes well to yield relatively smooth surfaces.

Clouage

Good nail-holding properties.

Collage

The material is reported to glue easily.

Ponçage

Sanding qualities are reported to improve in seasoned wood.

Finissage

It needs care in finishing, because of the resin present in the wood.

Cintrage à la vapeur

This species has moderate steam bending properties.

Compatibilité avec outils manuels

Dry timber is reported to work well with hand tools.
