Description botanique

The tree reaches a height of 11 to 25 m, with trunk diameters of 50 cm. The bole is often crooked.

Habitat naturel

Gilbertiodendron grandiflorum is found in savanna forests and near rivers.

Description anatomique du bois

Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Vestured pits. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Simple Axial parenchyma lozenge-aliform. Occasionally axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays exclusively uniseriate. Non-crystals in ray cells. Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

The sapwood is yellow to pale brown. The heartwood is dark red, it is clearly demarcated.

Ease of Drying: Air seasoning is fairly slow. Boards of 13 mm and 38 mm thick take about 2 months and 5 months to air dry. Drying Defects: There is only slight risk of insect attack and stain. Severe cupping was observed in samples from Sabah.
