Description botanique

It is a medium-sized to large tree up to 50 m tall, with boles up to 115 cm in diameter, often multiple-stemmed and conically thickened at base. Buttresses are often present. This species yields a latex which is made into black lacquer, it is also poisono

Habitat naturel

Gluta renghas occurs gregariously along river banks in freshwater tidal beaches and in swamp forests without peat formation.

Usages non ligneux

The sap of Rengas contains poisonous compounds which disappear gradually with drying. It might produce an adverse reaction on sensible individuals.

Description anatomique du bois

Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Simple perforation plates. Intervessel pits large, 10 micras or more. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

The sapwood is clearly differentiated, white to pale yellow. The heartwood is dark reddish brown or deep blood red, streaked with darker colored zones.
