MANDIOQUEIRA ÁSPERA (Qualea brevipedicellata)
Qualea brevipedicellata Stafleu
Mandioqueira Áspera (Brazil); Mandioqueira (Brazil)
Description Of The Tree
It is a straight and cylindrical tree, with commercial bole lengths of 13 m and diameters of 60 cm.
In Brazil it is found in the lower Amazon region, Belém, Gurupá, Almirim highland and Tapajós river (Pará) and Rondonia.
Anatomic Description Of Wood
Occasionally vessels per mm2 less than 6. Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma aliform. Axial parenchyma confluent.
Wood Macro Photo Tangential Plane
Wood Micro Photo Of Transversal Section
The heartwood and sapwood are distinct. The heartwood is strong brown with slight lines and the sapwood is pale yellow.
COLOR INDEX (1=Black, 7=Light yellow,white)
The grain is mostly interlocked.
The texture varies from medium to coarse.
The wood is moderate in luster.
Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)
Resistance To Impregnation
It is reported to be easy to impregnate with preservative salts.
Basic Density or Specific Gravity (O.D. weight/vol. green) (g/cm³)
Air-dry Density (Weight and volume at 12%MC) (g/cm³)
Total shrinkage Tangential (Saturated to 0%MC) (%)
Total shrinkage Radial (Saturated to 0%MC) (%)
Ease of Drying: Air seasoning is generally reported to be difficult. Drying Defects: Strong tendency to warp and check, collapse and honeycombing are also reported. Kiln Schedules: Careful drying is recommended.
Recommended Dry Kiln Schedule
Dimensional stability ratio (Total Tangential Shrinkage %/Total Radial Shrinkage %)
Bending Strength (MOR),12%MC (kgf/cm²)
Stiffness (MOE) 12%MC (kgf/cm²)
Compression parallel to fiber 12%MC (kgf/cm²)
Compression perpendicular to fiber 12%MC (kgf/cm²)
Shear strength radial 12%MC (kgf/cm²)
Janka hardness (side) 12%MC (kgf)
Janka hardness (end grain) 12%MC (kgf)
Planing operations are easy, but with a bad finishing.
Boring is reported to be easy, with good finishing.
It is difficult to sand.
