Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

A medium-sized tree up to 30 m tall with bole up to 45 m in diameter, usually without buttresses but rarely buttresses present.

Natural Habitat

The tree usually grows in mixed dipterocarp forest up to 300 m altitude.

Natural Distribution

Peninsular Malaysia, southern Sumatra, Bangka, Belitung, Kalimantan and Sarawak (Borneo).

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Vessels per mm2 6 to 10 (medium). Wood diffuse porous. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Occasionally tyloses common. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Vessel-ray pits coarse in marginal rows. Vascular/vasicentric tracheides Axial parenchyma apparent with the naked eye. Axial parenchyma in thick bands. Occasionally prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. Axial parenchyma bands more than 3 cells wide. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Occasionally rays exclusively uniseriate. Occasionally prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
