Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

The tree reaches a height of 50 m, with diameters from 100 to 1.3 m. The bole is straight, cylindrical up to 26 m in length, generally unbuttressed, with a swollen base.

Anopyxis klaineana is a timber species which occurs in some abundance especially in wetter evergreen rain forests and in montane forests.

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Occasionally multiple perforation plates. Scalariform perforation plate Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Prismatic crystals in short chains in chambered axial parenchyma cells. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays non-storied. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Occasionally prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.
