Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

The bole is cylindrical, straight with buttresses rarely present.

Natural Habitat

This species grows in lowland forests up to 500 m of altitude by the river banks.

Natural Distribution

It is widespread throughout South-east Asia and New Guinea to Solomon Islands.

Non Timber Uses

The sawdust of this species may cause dermatitis.

Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more. Occasionally tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits coarse in marginal rows. Intervessel p Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Two cells per parenchyma strand. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Occasionally larger rays more than 4 seriate. Occasionally silica bodies in the ray cells. Prismatic crystals in radial alignment in procumbent ray cells (chambered cells). Occasionally body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows Septate fibers present. Fibers very thin walled. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
