Wood diffuse porous. Vessels per mm2 more than 20 (very abundant). Intervessel pits small, 7 micras or less. Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Axial parenchyma lozenge-aliform. Two cells per parenchyma strand. Rays storied. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Non-septate fibers.
M. frondosus has a pleasant odor.
The sapwood is differentiated. The heartwood is light to dark gray or light brown.
This species is reported to have irregular grain.
