Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less (very small). Occasionally tyloses common. Occasionally vessels per mm2 more than 20. Vessels per mm2 more than 2 Axial parenchyma absent or extremely rare, non visible with magnifying glass (8x). Over 9 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Ray height more than 1 mm. Occasionally larger rays more than 4 seriate. Prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells Septate fibers present. Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

Drying Defects

Ease of Drying: Air seasoning is reported as either good and fairly rapid or slow with some warping. Air seasoning may take about 3.5 months for boards of 12.5 mm. Drying Defects: Warping is reported. Kiln Schedules: Kiln drying of the wood is satisfactory. The recommended temperature is 71 degrees for boards up to 38 mm. It takes about 2 weeks to kiln dry boards of 25 mm thickness from green to 12% moisture content.
