It is a small to medium sized tree, 12 to 18 m tall, 40 to 60 cm in diameter. The boles are straight and cylindrical, without buttresses.
Lecythis lurida is found in terra firme rain forests in the lower Amazon and in the Atlantic forests of northern South America. It prefers the higher, well drained, areas in primary and secondary forests.
In Brazil it is reported in Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais and Bahia states.
Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Axial parenchyma in continuous tangential lines (included in reticulate and scalariform). Occasionally pith fleck. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. Silica bodies in the ray cells. Occasionally heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays.
The heartwood is light brown, slightly yellowish, becoming blood red, sharply demarcated from the yellowish cream sapwood.
It has straight grain.
This species is usually reported to have a medium texture.
The wood surface is moderate in luster.
Ease of Drying: Air drying is rated as moderate. Drying Defects: Slight risk of warping and checking.
Sawing of this species is reported to be rather difficult.
