Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is a small to medium-sized tree up to 30 m tall. The bole is up to 60 cm in diameter and sometimes with buttresses of up to 90 cm high.

Natural Habitat

Cynometra ramiflora is a typical element in the fringe of mangrove forests, but it is also found in the savanna forests, up to 500 m of altitude.

Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Intervessel pits small, 7 micras or less. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma confluent. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma bands more than 3 cells wide. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or squa

Grain

It is mostly straight to slightly or deeply interlocked.

Texture

The texture is moderately fine, its vessels are blocked with tyloses, often uneven.

Luster

Planed surfaces are generally not lustrous

Natural Durability

It is durable and resistant to fungi and insect attack.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)

Workability

Sawing

The wood is easy to saw but difficult to cross cut. In air dry condition it is difficult to saw with ordinary saws but chromium plated teeth it gives good results.

Rotary Veneer Cutting

Slicing is only possible after intensive steaming. It peels satisfactorily, but the often irregular shape of the logs and their high density make the timber unsuitable for plywood.

Sliced Veneer

Slicing is only possible after intensive steaming. It peels satisfactorily, but the often irregular shape of the logs and their high density make the timber unsuitable for plywood.

Machining

Machining of this species is fair to difficult.

Planing

Planing is reported to give a smooth finish.

Turning

Boring

This species is easy to bore.

Nailing

Pre-boring is recommended for nailing.

Gluing

It is reported to be easy to glue.

Finishing

Finishing of this wood is rated as fair to difficult.

Polishing

It has a good polishing.
