Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Colored deposits in heartwood vessels. Tyloses sclerotic. Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Simple perforation plates. Inter Occasionally axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma winged aliform (uni or bilateral winged). 3 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Occasionally sheath cells. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The sapwood is light yellow or straw, clearly demarcated. The heartwood is orange or olive-brown, darkening with age.

COLOR INDEX (1=Black, 7=Light yellow,white)

4

Grain

The grain is deeply interlocked, fibrous.

Texture

The wood is typically medium in texture.

Natural Durability

Pinhole borers often attack the sapwood, but the timber is resistant to termites and considerably resistant to marine borers.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)

6

Internal Growth Stresses

Timber of this species contains residual stresses.

Silica Content

Silica Content: Silica is absent. Silica Value: 0

Resistance To Impregnation

The heartwood is very difficult to impregnate, sapwood absorbs preservatives readily.

Workability

Sawing

Sawing of this species is difficult.

Rotary Veneer Cutting

Lamination of this species is possible.

Sliced Veneer

Lamination of this species is possible.

Blunting Effect

It is considered to have a severe blunting effect on the cutting elements.

Machining

Interlocked grain causes problems, special cutters are required.

Planing

The wood can be planed to a smooth surface, but there is some picking up on the radial.

Boring

Boring operations are fair to difficult.

Nailing

This species is reported to have a good nailing behavior.

Gluing

The timber is reported to glue well.

Finishing

Finishing is difficult and the surfaces are often rough.
