Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is a dominant tree, it attains heights from 35 to 40 m, with a diameter at breast height between 60 to 80 cm. The boles are clear for two thirds of the total length. It presents low, round buttresses.

Natural Habitat

Vochysia macrophylla is found in the tropical rain forests, especially close to rivers and streams.

Natural Distribution

This species is reported to be common in the forests of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels in tangential pattern. Occasionally vessels in dendritic pattern. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 less than Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma aliform. Axial parenchyma confluent. Rays as wide or wider than the pores. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Fibers very thin walled. Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
