Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Vessels in diagonal and/or radial pattern. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Simple perforation plates. Intervessel pits medium, 7 to 10 micras. Axial parenchyma aliform. Prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays of two distinct sizes. Ray height more than 1 mm. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The sapwood is not clearly differentiated from the heartwood. The heartwood is red brown, dark brown or yellow brown and the heartwood is sometimes redder than the sapwood.

5

Grain

The grain is straight to interlocked, sometimes wavy.

Texture

The texture is medium to coarse.

Natural Durability

The wood is considered as durable, but it rots in contact with the ground.
