Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Intervessel pits small, 7 micras or less. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Occasionally axial parenchyma confluent. Axial parenchyma storied. Prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. Occasionally two cells per parenchyma strand. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma st 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Occasionally rays of two distinct sizes. Ray height more than 1 mm. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Sheath cells. Prismatic crystals in radial alignment in procumbent ray cells (chambered cells). Occasionally body ray cells procum Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Odor

Fresh wood has an unpleasant smell.

Color

The sapwood varies from straw to buff, not clearly demarcated. The heartwood is cream to pale brown.

Grain

The grain is reported to be straight or shallowly interlocked.

Texture

Texture is usually medium to coarse.

Natural Durability

Logs are very susceptible to blue-stain, termite and pinhole borer attack, unless rapidly removed from forest or given protective treatment.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)

3

Resistance To Impregnation

This species can be impregnated fairly easily.

Workability

Sawing

The wood has a tendency to tear when quarter sawing boards with interlocked grain.

Rotary Veneer Cutting

Slicing is possible, but it may not be satisfactory due to the presence of harder and softer zones.

Sliced Veneer

Slicing is possible, but it may not be satisfactory due to the presence of harder and softer zones.

Blunting Effect

It is reported to gum up the saw-teeth. The blades must be cleaned frequently.

Planing

The response of this species to planing operations is good to fair. It tends to tear on radial boards with interlocked grain.

Moulding

It can be used for molding with satisfactory results.

Turning

Finishing

It finishes satisfactorily after filling

Steam Bending

Steam bending properties are poor.
