Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less (very small). Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 more than 20 (very abundant). Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Axial parenchyma bands more than 3 cells wide. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-III). Septate fibers present. Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The heartwood is pale yellowish-brown or pinkish-brown to dark pinkish-brown or reddish-brown. The sapwood is usually indistinctly demarcated from the heartwood.

COLOR INDEX (1=Black, 7=Light yellow,white)

4

Grain

The grain is straight to interlocked or wavy.

Texture

The texture ranges from moderately fine to moderately coarse.

Luster

Sometimes the heartwood has silvery luster.

Natural Durability

The wood is classified as non-durable under exposed conditions or in contact with the ground.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)

5

Internal Growth Stresses

Residual stresses present in the wood may cause defects while processing the timber.

Resistance To Impregnation

This timber can be impregnated without difficulty.

Drying Defects

Ease of Drying: Air seasoning is reported to be good but slow. Drying Defects: Little tendency to warp and end splitting is reported. Kiln Schedules: Schedule recommended for Sepetir.

Workability

Sawing

The wood saws well, but excessive tension wood may cause jamming and extreme wooliness in some logs.

Rotary Veneer Cutting

This species is reported to be interesting for lamination, but Machang veneer has a tendency to curl and wrinkle during drying.

Sliced Veneer

This species is reported to be interesting for lamination, but Machang veneer has a tendency to curl and wrinkle during drying.

Machining

The response of this species to machining operations is good to fair. It gives rough surfaces in the radial face.

Planing

Planing operations are rather easy, but often rough radial surfaces are reported.

Moulding

Molding of this species is reported to be easy.

Boring

Boring operations are rated as fair to difficult.

Mortising

Mortising operations are rather easy.

Nailing

Nailing is reported as easy.

Gluing

Gluing behavior is reportedly good.

Finishing

Filling is required.

Polishing

Filling is required.
