It is an evergreen, dioecious, small to medium-sized tree up to 30 m tall. The bole is straight, up to 50 cm in diameter, occasionally with stilt roots, rarely with buttresses.
Macaranga is usually a common element of secondary forests.
Medicinal properties are reported, probably due to the tannin content.
Vessels in radial multiples of 4 or more common. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less (very small). Tyloses common. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide.

The heartwood varies from pale yellow-brown to pale brown or gray-brown, sometimes with a pinkish tinge, not clearly differentiated from the sapwood.

The texture is moderately fine to moderately coarse and even.
The planed surfaces are lustrous.
This species is rated as non-durable, but it is moderately resistant to dry-wood termites.
