Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Occasionally tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less. Tyloses common. Occasionally vessels per mm2 more than 20. Scalariform perforation plates with 5 to 15 bars. Multiple perf Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Occasionally prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. Over 9 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays commonly 2 seriate. Prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Odor

Odor and taste are indistinct.

Color

The sapwood is demarcated from the heartwood. The heartwood is usually uniform light to dark olive brown, or streaked with black.

Grain

Grain is straight or slightly interlocked.

Texture

Texture is typically fine.

Luster

Wood luster is reported to be rather low.

Natural Durability

It is reportedly, one of the most durable timbers in contact with the ground.
