Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is a medium-sized tree up to 21 m tall. The bole is up to 65 cm in diameter.

Natural Habitat

It is reported in primary lowland forests on periodically dry soils, volcanic sands and in swamps, at altitudes up to 1,200 m.

Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Helical thickenings in vessel elements present. Simple perforation plates. Intervessel pits medium, 7 to 10 micras. Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma bands more than 3 cells wide 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Occasionally oil and/or mucilage cells associated with the axial and/or ray parenchyma (idioblasts). Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

Drying Defects

Ease of Drying: Air seasoning is reported to be easy but slow. Air seasoning of 2.5 cm thick boards to 16% moisture content takes approximately 75 days. Drying Defects: Slight degrade due to warping and checking. Kiln Schedules: In Indonesia, temperatures of 85% to 50% are suggested. Kiln drying of 2.5 cm thick boards takes about 8 days.
