Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 micras or less. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Helical thickenings in vessel elements present. Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Interve Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Occasionally paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays of two distinct sizes. Ray height more than 1 mm. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Occasionally sheath cells. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Body ray cells Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The heartwood is uniformly yellow turning greenish-yellow on exposure, not clearly differentiated form the sapwood.

COLOR INDEX (1=Black, 7=Light yellow,white)

6

Grain

The grain is frequently straight.

Texture

The wood is frequently reported to be fine textured.

Luster

The wood is slightly lustrous.

Natural Durability

It is prone to stain and susceptible to termite and marine borer attacks.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)

5

Internal Growth Stresses

Severe end splits are reported in logs of this species.

Resistance To Impregnation

The heartwood is moderately resistant to preservatives, the sapwood is permeable.

Drying Defects

Ease of Drying: Kelat timber air dries slowly to very slowly. In Malaysia boards 15 mm thick are reported to dry in 5 months. Drying Defects: The timber is liable to end-splitting and checking. Kiln Schedules: Kiln drying requires a mild schedule. Pre-drying before kilning is advised to prevent serious degrade.

Workability

Rotary Veneer Cutting

Peeling should be done as soon as possible after felling. End splits in logs are the main problem in the manufacture of rotary veneer.

Sliced Veneer

Peeling should be done as soon as possible after felling. End splits in logs are the main problem in the manufacture of rotary veneer.

Machining

It works well in all processes.

Planing

Planing operations are reported to be easy, but the planed surfaces may not be perfectly smooth.
