Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

The tree reaches a height of 8 to 30 m, with diameters from 30 to 100 cm. The bole is up to 6 to 30 m in length. Longitudinal fluting near the base makes it difficult to cut out a square log.

Natural Habitat

Enantia chlorantha occurs in the moist lands of evergreen forest, the lower parts of mixed deciduous forest, and in the middle storey of low-land rain forest.

Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Non-vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 10 to 20 (abundant). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel Axial parenchyma scalariform. Non-crystals in axial parenchyma cells. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma bands over 4 per mm. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays non-storied. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-III). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The heartwood is green-yellow when freshly cut, turning to dark yellow on exposure, it is not demarcated.

Grain

Straight; grain has no particular influence on drying, machining and finishing qualities.

Texture

This wood has a somewhat fine texture.

Luster

The wood surface is low in luster.

Natural Durability

Slightly durable to decay. This species needs preservative treatment for uses with risks of occasional re-humidification. It is not suited for uses with risks of permanent or long-lasting humidification. The heartwood is sensible to termites and Lyctus at

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)
