Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

The boles are reported to be straight and cylindrical, with commercial lengths from 8 to 23 m, and diameters from 60 to 80 cm. It presents tall buttresses 2.5 to 4 m tall.

Natural Habitat

Eriotheca trees are found in primary and secondary forests, growing on well drained sites.

Non Timber Uses

The wood of this species contains a dark resin which can affect processing operations.

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 200 micras or more (large). Tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits coarse throughout the ray cell. V Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Axial parenchyma storied. Occasionally prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Occasionally rays storied. Rays 1 to 4 seriate. Heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays. Body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-I). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
