Trade Name

Noum ossol

Scientific Name

Endodesmia calophylloides Benth.

Family

CLUSIACEAE

Common Names

Nom ossol (Gabon); Kok (Congo); Tsatsa (Cameroon); M'fass (Cameroon); Kpekpa (Cameroon)

Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

The tree reaches a height of 16 to 43 m. The bole is thin.

Natural Habitat

Endodesmia calophylloides occurs in swamp forests and by rivers, growing gregariously.

Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Vessels per mm2 6 to 10 (medium). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits coarse throughout the ray cell. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays non-storied. Rays exclusively uniseriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The heartwood is pink, it is not demarcated.

Grain

Straight or slightly interlocked, sometimes with an influence on further processing operations.

Texture

The texture of the wood is frequently coarse.

Natural Durability

Not durable; important risks of decay attacks at any processing step, from logs up to final products. It must receive preservative treatment. Heartwood is sensible to Lyctus attacks.

Workability

Sawing

Sawing of this species requires powerful equipment.

Rotary Veneer Cutting

Not suitable for veneering.

Sliced Veneer

Not suitable for veneering.

Blunting Effect

Moderate blunting effect; stellited blades for sawing and carbide tools for machining are advised.

Machining

It needs powerful tools for processing. Possible difficulties caused by interlocked grain are reported.

Planing

Moderately easy; tools must be cautiously sharpened.

Moulding

Rather difficult; special tools are needed.

Turning

Boring

Rather difficult; special tools are needed.

Mortising

Rather difficult; special tools are needed.

Nailing

Pre-boring is necessary.

Gluing

Glues well if basic gluing technical rules are followed.

Sanding

Easy to perform; it gives good results.

Polishing

Needs pre-coating.

Response To Hand Tools

Working with hand tools is difficult.
