Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

The trees are reported to reach heights of 40 m, with trunk diameters ranging from 60 to 80 cm. The boles are straight and cylindrical up to two thirds of the total height. It presents medium sized buttresses.

Natural Habitat

Pterygota amazonica grows in the well drained tropical rain forests of Peru. It prefers non inundable, well drained areas.

Natural Distribution

It is found in Peru in the departments of Huanuco, Ucayali, Loreto, Madre de Dios, San Martin and Cerro de Pasco.

Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. I Axial parenchyma apparent with the naked eye. Axial parenchyma in thick bands. Axial parenchyma storied. Prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. Axial parenchyma bands more than 3 cells wide. Axial parench Rays less than 4 per mm (rare). Rays less than 4 per mm (rare). Larger rays width 0. 1 mm or more and 2 mm or more in height. Rays non-storied. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogen Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
