Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is a deciduous, medium-sized to fairly large tree up to 40 m tall. The bole is straight, cylindrical, branchless for 20 m, up to 100 cm in diameter. Occasionally with buttresses up to 2 m high.

Natural Habitat

Petersianthus quadrialatus grows scattered in primary rain forests at low to medium altitude on well drained soils, near river banks or hill sides.

Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Simple perforation plates. Intervessel pits large, 10 micras or more. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma aliform. Axial parenchyma confluent. Siliceous bodies in the axial parenchyma cells. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Occasionally axial parenchyma 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Ray height more than 1 mm. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Silica bodies in the ray cells. Prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The heartwood is pale red turning reddish-brown, sharply demarcated from the pale sapwood.

Grain

The grain is mostly interlocked.

Texture

The texture varies from moderately fine to moderately coarse.

Natural Durability

The wood is durable for interior use and slightly durable when exposed to the weather or in contact with the ground.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)

6

Resistance To Impregnation

The heartwood is amenable to preservative treatment.
