Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

The trees reach heights of up to 45 m, with trunk diameters of 70 to 150 cm. The boles are straight but somewhat conical, with commercial lengths of about 20 m or more.

Natural Habitat

Podocarpus oleifolius grows in fairly homogeneous stands in tropical montane forests. It is found in well drained areas between 1,400 to 3,150 m of altitude.

Natural Distribution

P. oleifolius is an American tropical conifer reported from Mexico and Honduras, south to Peru and Bolivia.

Axical parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Colored deposits. Unseriate, homogenous ray. (4)-6-(9)/mm (1)-7-(25) cells high. Crossfield pitting: piceoid cupressoid 1/crossfield. Tracheids : (18)-36-(71) micra in tangential diameter. Intertracheid pits : 1-2 rows with crassulae.
