General Wood Description

Odor

Its taste and odor is not perceptible.

Color

The sapwood is light pinkish, sharply marked off from the heartwood, which is reddish when fresh, turning reddish brown to russet, with age.

COLOR INDEX (1=Black, 7=Light yellow,white)

3

Grain

The grain is interlocked or wavy.

Texture

This species is reported to have a moderately fine texture.

Natural Durability

It is considered as non durable to moderately durable. It can be attacked by termites and it is moderately susceptible to Lyctus beetles. In Philippines it is reported as durable.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)

6

Resistance To Impregnation

Due to the presence of tyloses the heartwood is very difficult to treat with preservatives. The sapwood is moderately permeable to preservative treatment.

Workability

Sawing

The behavior of this species in sawing is considered to be fair to difficult. Band saws are recommended for ripping.

Rotary Veneer Cutting

It is probably not suitable for veneer because it is too heavy and liable to defects when peeled.

Sliced Veneer

It is probably not suitable for veneer because it is too heavy and liable to defects when peeled.

Blunting Effect

The wood has a moderate blunting effect.

Machining

Machining operations are easy to fair.

Planing

In planing, a 30 degrees cutting angle is suitable for back-sawn material, but 20 degrees is recommended for quarter-sawn stock.

Moulding

Molding is reported to be easy to fair.
