Wood Identification

Anatomic Description Of Wood

Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits Axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Axial parenchyma thick lozenge-aliform. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells and/or in fibers. 3 to 4 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays non-storied. Rays exclusively uniseriate. Body ray cells procumbent with one row of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-III). Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.

General Wood Description

Color

The sapwood is silver with red tinges. The heartwood is red to light brown, it is not clearly demarcated.

Grain

Straight or interlocked, sometimes with an influence on further processing operations. Interlocked grain is high but not frequent.

Texture

The texture of the wood is frequently coarse.

Luster

This species is low in luster.

Natural Durability

Heartwood is sensible to Lyctus attacks.

Natural durability index (1= Very high durability, 7=Vey low durability)

5

Resistance To Impregnation

Nearly impossible to treat with a too much low penetration of the preservative substances.

Moderately easy; tools must be cautiously sharpened.

Boring

Moderately easy; tools must be cautiously sharpened.

Mortising

Moderately easy; tools must be cautiously sharpened.

Nailing

Pre-boring is necessary.

Gluing

Glues well if basic gluing technical rules are followed.

Sanding

Particular care is needed to avoid woolly aspect of the surface.

Polishing

Needs pre-coating.

Response To Hand Tools

No particular problems.
