Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is a medium-sized to fairly large deciduous tree up to 35 m tall, with often rather crooked bole. It is branchless for up to 14 m, but usually much less, and up to 70 cm in diameter. The buttresses are absent or small.

Natural Habitat

Dillenia obovata is found in lowland deciduous or evergreen secondary forests, up to 500 m of altitude. In Indochina it is reported up to 1,800 m of altitude.

Vessels per mm2 5 to 20. Wood diffuse porous. Vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 200 micras. Vessel-ray pits reticulate and/or foraminate. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Axial parenchyma scalariform. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Body ray cells procumbent with mostly 2 to 4 rows of upright and/or square marginal cells (Kribs-II). Sheath cells. Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.
