MYRTACEAE
Kissa (Mali); Kayo (Guinea); Kaga (Guinea); Syzygium
Syzygium fleuryi A. Chev.; Calyptranthes guineense Willd.
The tree reaches a height of 26 to 40 m. The bole is rarely of good shape, buttressed, with length from 10 to 16 m. The trunk diameter attains up to 200 cm.
Syzygium guineense is common in swampy areas, by water courses, in rain forests, and widely distributed up to altitudes of 2,400 m.
Wood diffuse porous. Occasionally vessels exclusively solitary (over 90%). Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 100 to 150 micras (small). Tyloses thin walled. Vestured pits. Vessels per mm2 10 to 20 (abundant). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits coarse Axial parenchyma confluent. Non-crystals in axial parenchyma cells. 5 to 8 cells per parenchyma strand. Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays non-storied. Larger rays more than 4 seriate. Heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays. Non-septate fibers. Fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits.
Unrestricted
The heartwood is red or pink-brown, pale brown on drying, it is not clearly demarcated.
Straight; grain has no particular influence on drying, machining and finishing qualities.
The wood is mostly fine in texture.
It is reported to be low in luster.
Moderately durable to decay. Without preservative treatment, this species can be used only under risk of occasional re-humidification. It is not suited for uses with risks of permanent or long-lasting humidification. Moderately resistant to termites attack
