It is a medium to small sized tree up to 20 meters tall, with straight boles free of branches up to 10 meters. The diameter range is between 30 to 50 cm. The tree presents small buttresses.
Gonocaryum calleryanum is found in primary and secondary forests, up to 750 m of altitude, in the subcanopy of dipterocarp forests.
Wood diffuse porous. Colored deposits in heartwood vessels. Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates. Vessel-ray pits similar to intervessel pits in size and shape. Axial parenchyma aliform. Axial parenchyma confluent. Axial parenchyma in narrow bands on lines up to 3 cells wide. 4 to 10 rays per mm (medium). Rays exclusively uniseriate. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent). Fibers with distinctly bordered pits.

The heartwood is purple brown to yellow brown, not differentiated from the sapwood.
The grain is frequently straight.
The texture is fine to medium.
The wood is moderately durable, it is recommended for interior use.
