Description Of The Tree

Botanical Description

It is often about 25 to 35 m in height, with a trunk diameter up to 100 cm. The boles are straight, 15 to 20 m long. It presents small to medium sized steep buttresses.

Natural Habitat

Terminalia oblonga is a fast growing, pioneer species. It prefers alluvial soils. This species occurs in the lowlands below 600 m of altitude.

From Guatemala south to Brazil, Bolivia and Peru.

Wood diffuse porous. Vessels solitary and in short radial multiples. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina 150 to 200 micras (medium). Occasionally tyloses common. Vessels per mm2 10 to 20 (abundant). Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Simple perforation plates Occasionally axial parenchyma in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and/or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma confluent. Occasionally axial parenchyma oblique and/or sinuous. Prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial pare Occasionally rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays more than 10 per mm (abundant). Rays exclusively uniseriate. Occasionally prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Homogeneous rays and/or sub-homogeneous rays (all ray cells procumbent).
