It is a large tree, it attains heights from 30 to 40 m, with a diameter at breast height between 80 to 100 cm. It presents buttresses up to 3 m tall.
Septotheca tessmannii is found along rivers and streams in the varzea tropical rain forests of Peru.
In Peru it grows in the basins of the Ucayali and Pachitea rivers, where it is reported to be abundant.
Vessels per mm2 less than 6 (rare). Intervessel pits small, 7 micras or less. Axial parenchyma absent or extremely rare, non visible with magnifying glass (8x). Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse and/or diffuse in aggregates. Prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells. Prismatic crystals in the ray cells. Heterogeneous rays and/or multiseriate heterogeneous rays.

The sapwood is slightly differentiated, the heartwood is pink.
